Stem cell therapy, answered honestly
Clear, evidence-aware answers to the questions guests ask most about regenerative therapy in Bangkok — cost, candidacy, safety, travel, and what to expect afterward. Sterling Longevity is a wellness-travel concierge, not a medical provider; treatment is delivered by licensed physicians at our Sterling-certified partner clinic, and the information here is educational, not medical advice.
Treatment & how it works
What regenerative therapy is, how it is delivered, and what the evidence does and does not show.
What is mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy?
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that can be expanded in a laboratory and administered by injection or intravenous infusion as part of a regenerative protocol. Research indicates they act mainly through paracrine signalling — releasing factors that modulate inflammation and support the local tissue environment — rather than by replacing tissue directly, which is why some scientists call them "medicinal signalling cells." They are studied across orthopaedic, respiratory, and immune-related conditions; the evidence base is still developing, and this information is educational rather than a treatment recommendation.
What is the difference between stem cells and PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) concentrates growth factors from your own blood to signal your body’s existing repair processes, while MSC therapy uses mesenchymal stem cells that additionally modulate inflammation and secrete regenerative factors. They are different approaches studied for overlapping conditions, and PRP is typically lower-cost but may need repeating; which, if either, is appropriate is a clinical decision made by a physician.
What are exosomes, and how are they used?
Exosomes are tiny vesicles (roughly 30–150 nanometres) that cells release to carry signalling cargo such as microRNAs and proteins. In Sterling’s Discovery protocol, mesenchymal-stem-cell-derived exosomes are given as a Day 1 preparation therapy, intended to help reduce inflammation and prime tissues before the main protocol. Their therapeutic role is still being researched, and Sterling makes no efficacy claim.
What is NAD+ therapy used for?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme central to cellular energy and metabolism whose levels tend to decline with age. Within the Discovery Experience it is delivered intravenously as a Day 1 preparation therapy, intended to support cellular readiness before the main protocol. It is offered as a wellness preparation, not a treatment for any specific disease.
Are the cells fresh or frozen?
Our Sterling-certified partner clinic uses fresh, high-viability cells rather than frozen cells. Every guest receives a Certificate of Analysis documenting their cell count, viability, and sterility results.
How is the treatment actually delivered?
Depending on the condition, cells are delivered by image-guided injection into a joint or spine, or by intravenous infusion over approximately two hours. All procedures are performed by licensed physicians at our Sterling-certified partner clinic.
Candidacy & getting started
Who regenerative therapy may suit, and how Sterling assesses it.
Who is a good candidate for regenerative medicine?
Candidacy depends on your diagnosis, imaging or test results, overall health, and goals — not everyone is suitable. The free Sterling assessment provides a first review, and final eligibility is confirmed on-site after bloodwork and a physician consultation.
How does the free assessment work?
The assessment is a short, AI-guided health conversation that reviews your condition against Sterling’s research library and explains what to expect. You can also upload recent bloodwork for a plain-language explanation. It is free and carries no obligation.
What conditions does Sterling cover?
Sterling’s condition pages cover knee, hip, shoulder, back, ankle and foot pain, meniscus tears, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and immune support. Whether a regenerative approach is appropriate for your situation is always a clinical decision.
Do I need a referral or recent test results?
You do not need a referral to take the assessment. Recent imaging or bloodwork helps the partner-clinic physicians assess you more precisely, and you can upload documents securely during the assessment.
Can I bring a companion?
Yes. Many guests travel with a partner or family member, and Sterling can help coordinate companion travel and accommodation alongside your program.
Cost & investment
How pricing works — including why extended-program prices are shared in context rather than published.
How much does stem cell therapy cost in Bangkok?
Sterling’s entry program, the Discovery Experience, is $5,999 and includes a $5,000 credit toward any extended program chosen on the same trip — so the net cost of Discovery is $999 if you upgrade. Extended-program costs (such as Essential, Advanced, or Transformation) are determined after your on-site bloodwork and physician assessment, because the recommended approach is personalised, and are shared in context rather than published in advance.
Why are extended-program prices not listed on the website?
The right program depends on what the partner-clinic physicians recommend after reviewing your bloodwork on-site, so a fixed public price list would be misleading. Discovery pricing is fully transparent ($5,999 with a $5,000 credit); extended-program pricing is shared once your personalised recommendation is known.
What is included in the $5,999 Discovery Experience?
Discovery includes private airport transfers, 7 nights at a 5-star luxury hotel, daily onsen spa access, a comprehensive bloodwork panel, preparation IV therapies (Exosome and NAD+), a partner-clinic physician consultation and personalised assessment, a laboratory tour, a dedicated Sterling coordinator, portal access, and 12 months of follow-up support — plus a $5,000 credit toward any extended program.
How does the $5,000 Discovery credit work?
If you choose to upgrade to an extended program on the same trip, $5,000 from your Discovery payment is applied as a credit toward it. The credit is same-trip only and is applied to the extended program’s cost.
Is stem cell therapy covered by insurance?
Regenerative stem cell therapies are generally not covered by US health insurance, as they are not FDA-approved for the conditions discussed. Most guests treat the program as an out-of-pocket wellness investment; check directly with your insurer for your specific policy.
Travel & Thailand logistics
What the journey to Bangkok looks like and how Sterling coordinates it.
Is medical tourism in Bangkok safe for Americans?
Bangkok is an established destination for international medical travel, with internationally accredited facilities and experienced English-speaking teams. Sterling coordinates private transfers, accommodation, and on-the-ground support throughout your stay, and only partners with clinics that meet its vetting standards.
How long is the trip?
The Discovery Experience is a 7-night program in Bangkok. Extended programs that involve immune-cell therapy can run longer (for example, around 28 days), which is discussed with you on-site if recommended.
What is included in the concierge experience?
Sterling coordinates private airport transfers, a 7-night 5-star luxury hotel stay, daily Japanese onsen spa access, and a dedicated coordinator for your entire trip, so the logistics are handled end to end.
How do I arrange flights?
You book your own flights, and Sterling collects your flight details after booking through the portal or Doctor Backed AI so transfers and clinic scheduling line up with your arrival and departure.
What support do I get before and after the trip?
Before the trip you receive prep guidance and portal access; after treatment you have 12 months of follow-up support through Doctor Backed AI, the Sterling team, and physician escalation when a medical question requires it.
Safety & governance
How care is governed, and the honest regulatory picture.
Is stem cell therapy in Bangkok safe?
Treatment is delivered by independently licensed physicians at our Sterling-certified partner clinic, which must meet Sterling’s vetting and accreditation standards. As with any medical procedure there are risks; these are discussed with you directly by the partner-clinic physicians, who obtain your informed consent on-site.
Is this treatment FDA-approved?
No. The stem cell therapies described are not FDA-approved in the United States for the conditions discussed, and the FDA has not evaluated them. They are delivered abroad by licensed physicians, and individual results vary.
Does Sterling provide the medical treatment?
No. Sterling Longevity is a wellness-travel concierge, not a medical provider. We vet clinics, coordinate the journey, and provide education and support; the medical treatment is delivered by independently licensed physicians at our Sterling-certified partner clinic, with whom you have a direct medical relationship.
Who is accountable for the content on this site?
Sterling’s educational content is written and reviewed by the Sterling Research Team against primary medical research. You can read how care and content are governed on our clinical governance page.
What are the risks of treatment?
In a 2012 systematic review of 36 clinical trials (Lalu et al., "SafeCell"), no serious adverse events were attributed to mesenchymal stem cells, and a transient, self-limiting fever was the most commonly reported effect. Even so, every medical procedure carries risk, and the specific risks for your situation are explained by the partner-clinic physicians before you provide informed consent. This describes a study’s findings, not a guarantee of safety or outcome; individual results vary.
Results & after-care
What to expect afterwards, framed honestly.
How long does it take for stem cell therapy to work?
Timelines vary by individual and condition. Some guests describe gradual changes over several weeks to a few months, while others notice less. Regenerative outcomes are not guaranteed, and no specific result can be promised.
Are results guaranteed?
No. Individual results vary significantly and are never guaranteed. Any figures Sterling shares are attributed to specific published studies and describe those studies’ findings, not a promised outcome for you.
Will I need repeat treatments?
Most guests are not told they require repeat treatments. Whether any further treatment is appropriate is a clinical decision made with the partner-clinic physicians based on how you respond.
What does the 12-month follow-up include?
After treatment you have 12 months of support through Doctor Backed AI for everyday questions, the Sterling team for human help, and physician escalation for serious medical questions. Scheduled check-ins track your progress in the portal.
Can I see proof of what I received?
Yes. Every guest receives a Certificate of Analysis documenting their exact cell count, viability percentage, and sterility testing, along with their medical documentation from the partner clinic.
Still have a question?
The free Sterling assessment answers your specific situation in a few minutes — what to expect, whether you may be a candidate, and the path that fits you. No obligation.
